Good questions
Everything you’re wondering
First time getting a massage — or first time having one at home? Here’s what to expect, start to finish.
Where will my massage session take place?
Wherever you are most comfortable — that is the whole idea. Kim brings everything to you: a professional massage table, fresh linens, and soft music if you like. All you need is a quiet room with enough space for the table.
Must I be completely undressed?
No. Most massage techniques are traditionally performed unclothed, but what you wear is entirely up to you. Undress only to your level of comfort — you will be properly draped for the entire session either way.
Will the practitioner be present while I undress?
No. Kim will step out of the room while you undress, settle onto the table, and cover yourself with a clean sheet.
Will I be covered during the session?
Yes. You will be properly draped at all times to keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on is ever uncovered.
What parts of my body will be massaged?
A typical full-body session includes work on your back, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, neck, and shoulders. If there are areas you would like focused on — or skipped — just say so.
What will the massage feel like?
Sessions usually begin with broad, flowing strokes that calm the nervous system and ease surface tension. As your body relaxes, pressure gradually increases to work deeper into specific areas. A light oil or lotion keeps the work smooth and hydrates your skin. If anything ever feels uncomfortable, speak up right away — massage is most effective when your body is not resisting it.
Are there different kinds of massage and bodywork?
Many. Different techniques use different strokes — flowing movement, focused pressure points, rocking, stretching, and more. Kim is trained in multiple modalities and will talk through which approach fits your goals best.
What should I do during the session?
Make yourself comfortable — that is your only job. Many people simply close their eyes and relax. Kim will gently move you or let you know if anything is needed (like lifting an arm). Feel free to ask questions before or during the session, and always speak up if you want more or less pressure.
How will I feel afterward?
Most people feel deeply relaxed. Some experience relief from long-term aches and pains built up from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial slowed-down feeling, many notice increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity that can last for days.
What are the benefits of massage?
Massage can release chronic muscular tension and pain, improve circulation, increase joint flexibility, reduce mental and physical fatigue, promote faster healing of injured muscle tissue, improve posture, and lower blood pressure. It is also known to promote better sleep, sharpen concentration, reduce anxiety, and create an overall sense of well-being.
Are there conditions that would make massage inadvisable?
Yes — which is why Kim asks general health questions before your first session. It is very important to mention any health conditions or medications. If you are under a doctor’s care, it is strongly advised that you get a written recommendation for massage before your session; depending on the condition, your doctor’s approval may be required.
